I'm going to 3D print a set of trays to hold and organize some 2x2s and year set holders, but don't know if any of the materials I'm using might be harmful to the coins. Specifically, PLA and ABS are the easiest and most common materials to print, with a slight preference toward PLA. Are either of these ok to use to store coins with (not in direct contact, coins will be in 2x2s or other holders)?

I searched the forum but only really found that PVC is bad.

Thanks!

Soft (Plasticized) PVC is bad. Rigid PVC should be okay.

I don't think it matters.
You will have the mylar in the 2 x 2 protecting the coins.

To the best of my knowledge, neither ABS nor PLA have significant post-processing offgassing issues. To be safe, I would let the trays stand for a good long while (a couple of months) before you put the coins in them.

And thanks for jolting all us old fogies (myself included) with interesting new technology like that!

(Edit: maybe months is overkill ... And thinking about those two options, I think that PLA came to market as an inherently biodegradable plastic, so I would go with ABS. It's got a pretty good track record of durability over the last 50 years. Think telephones ... those old fashioned ones that have a dial).

As long as your coins are in flips, they should be safe.
Now have you thought about printing the coins next?
