I've recently gotten back into coin collecting after 20+ years away from the hobby. I collected in highschool and for a while in college. During that time, I was given a bag of old foreign coins that my grand-father had collected during his time in the US Navy. I had looked through then a few times, but didn't know much about them (pre-internet) so I put them in flips and forgot about them. Now that I am easing back into the hobby, I pulled those old foreign coins out and hopped on the internet to try to learn more about them. There's a pair of silver Egyptian coins from 1910-1911 that caught my attention. In my opinion, they are in beautiful condition for a coin of their age. Today I went on PCGS to see if I could find pics of a high graded example. I ended up discovering that one coin had a mintage of just 170k and the other had a mintage of just 250k. Additionally, I saw that only 3 of one and 6 of the other have even been graded by PCGS. So at this point, I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to get mine graded. Here's some pics of my coins followed by the PCGS graded pics.

Very nice examples of those coins!

I think you are in a better position to judge with the coins in hand, but on the first one (regnal yr 2), I think I see more wear at the center of the toughra, and on those horn shaped things below it than on the comparable graded examples. So I am not sure you would get an MS grade, maybe AU?

The second coin (regnal yr 3) looks a bit sharper.

It will also be interesting to hear others' comments on whether there is obvious evidence of having been cleaned. I think I see abrasions on the second coin?

Probably all of those factors would affect your decision.

Thank you very much for the reply! Like I said, I'm pretty new and grading is a little tough to nail down. I did notice that PCGS seems to be pretty light on graded older world coins. Is there another service that does better with world coins or is it just that the rest of the world isn't as hung up on grading as us Americans are?

You will probably get varying opinions on this. For now, I think yes, this is true. However, foreign coins grading is on the rise, though I doubt Ottoman coins are anywhere in the top 20 countries.

Not sure if you researched comparable coins on ebay, and found things like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Egypt-Otto...047675.l2557

So, it may be that the value of these coins in high grade doesn't justify the cost of grading, and this contributes to the dearth of graded examples.

Your coin looks like it has been circulated. In the photos I do see hailines in the fields so I believe it was cleaned at some point. I'd grade it AU-55 details, cleaned. Not worth the cost to get it slabbed by a TPG.
