Thanks! Been upgrading my 1909-S VDB a couple of times over the past two years or so, whenever a better one came along at a low price I'd pick it up and sell off the lesser one. This time I had two I really liked, as that cleaned one was just marvelous-looking in hand. But I just can't keep two coins that expensive outside of my primary interest and one had to go. I knew if this one came back 63 I'd still be very tempted to keep the other one just for the looks of it, but took a chance and bet my basket on it going 64 and ended up getting the grade. Happy ending, as pretty unlikely I'm going to shoot for any higher on this year as again, outside my primary interest but something I want in the collection at a nice grade.

Here's the slab for Grapes.

Tropical;
I think the right choice.
The cleaned coin no matter if it were slightly better, will always have the cleaning hanging over it. Now you have a nice graded coin, and someone has the same situation you were in.

I would take from this thread the following. Never buy a cleaned coin with the intentions of replacing it with a better example.

Yes Dan, but buying a cleaned coin at a good price may change your mind. If I told you I'd sell you the cleaned coin in the original photos in this thread for $600 would you buy it? That was what I paid for it, from a dealer who knows his stuff and exactly what the coin is worth so no funny business. I made $500 profit when I sold it and put that into my upgrade, so I don't have nearly as much in the final coin as I would if I would have just bought it straight off.

Since I've got it downloaded, I'll finish this with the true view images from PCGS.

I wish! But right now there is a lack of good rarities in my general area so hard to get a bargain on any of those. Even the dealers are calling out of state to try and get good stuff as it's a sellers market right now and they can't keep good stuff on the shelf.
