Just picked up a nice 1909-S VDB that I'm sending off to PCGS and expecting MS-63 BN. The one I already had is stunning, but lightly cleaned. So, assuming I get MS-63 on the one I'm sending off, which do I keep for the collection as I can't afford to have two of these sitting around.

The new one heading for PCGS

In my opinion, the new one. Both are stunning examples.

The first one is a earlier die state and the colorful one.

The brighter one is better looking and I think has better details.

I'd be hard pressed to choose! Both are very nice examples.

I'd bet your expectation of 63 Brown on the first example is too conservative. I'd bet on a 64.

I'd keep the BN one. In my opinion, it's better to have an original BN than a cleaned RB. I like originality.

To me the color one looks hokey in color. It would probably get a genuine coin, but with no grade because of an artificial color issue.

In the end I want to own problem-free coins and notes, especially if they're scarce. I'll go with the new (first) one.

I'd go with the first, IMO it has better eye appeal

I would sell the lightly cleaned one on ebay or something. Keep the first one.

Thanks for the comments! Was out and just getting a chance to check on things. I like that Coop pointed out the earlier die state, as that sorta does matter to me when I factor in things. But honestly the cleaned one looks even nicer in hand than in the pics. It's gorgeous in hand and looks great.

I have until my coin gets to, and back from, PCGS to make up my mind. Certainly if moxking is onto something and it comes back 64 then the decision is made. Otherwise I personally tend to not collect cleaned coins but over the years I have come to understand that the coin is still the coin and it is a totally arbitrary thing that cleaning is frowned upon. Sure, don't use borax and steel wool but even the TPGs offer cleaning now as "restoration" so why not go with the best looking coin? I dunno. I'll be pondering this one for a bit yet, and yes, a fine predicament to be in.

This is a simple question to answer.

You keep the first one and store it in it's slab.

You put the second one in your Dansco or equivalent album.

Problem solved!
