This may be an odd question but since there are 2 types of 1979 proof sets. Has anyone ever heard of both types of S's being mixed into 1 set? Like a crossover from one type to the other? Is that even possible? Just curious.

Probably the only set that would be common is the type one. Most of the time they were not a complete set of 1.

Interesting Coop. I was going by the PCGS price guide that has each Proof set listed separately. I wonder how they would determine If it was a type 1 or 2 if there are only 1 or 2 examples in the set. Was it only the Susan B and the quarter that showed the 2 types of S mint mark?

I believe they all denominations had type 1 and 2 in sets, but not all were type 2. The SBA was the most desired in Type 2.

Thanks for the info and pics Coop. I currently have a 1979 proof set en route to me. I'm hoping that I will get lucky and maybe get a type 2 somewhere in the mix.

Lets see if I can make it a bit clearer. The change in mintmark did not occur on all the coins at the same time. The cent changed first and the dollar last. You can find sets that are all Type 1, 5 type 1 1 type 2, 4 type 1 2 type 2 etc all the way to all 6 coins being type 2. The high premiums you see listed for a Type 2 set is for a set with all 6 coins having type 2 mintmarks. Mixed coin sets are usually priced pretty close to that a type 1 set that has all six coins with type 1 mintmarks.

This is true on both 1979 and 1981 sets.

Thanks Conder101 for clearing that up. I would assume type 2 sets would be a bit scarce considering the mint marks changing at different times.

Yes and since the dollar coin was the last to change most of the proof sets had been produced before that happened. That is also why the individual type 2 dollars have a higher premium than the other type 2 coins. There were more of the lower denominations with type 2 mintmarks made than there were type 2 dollar coins.

Received the set today. Only the cent and nickel were type 2. Oh well.
