1924 Lincoln Cent Anomaly - Coin Community Forum

Belladonna New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 08/20/2019 3:28 pm Hello again, I've been here once before concerning a 1924 Lincoln Wheat cent. Not at all in good shape and only found due to mistakenly taken for a 1944 penny while checking weights searching for a steel penny. Long story short thought I had one with a weight of 2.7 gr! UNTIL rechecking the date and found it to be a 1924!! Seems I'm the only one surprised it impressed by this find (or anomaly in my opinion). I sent it in to NGC to grade for an Error. They were so unimpressed it took 2 sends for them to even acknowledge an error! Anyway, given no explanation whatsoever I figure either the coin or I am nit impressive enough to warrant any reaction or any form of answer at all. So that's the story and here's a picture! Any thoughts or ideas how it happened? I'm tired of tryiing.. Report this Post to the Staff

Evan7 Pillar of the Community United States 1070 Posts	Posted 08/20/2019 5:42 pm This coin is heavily circulated, there's also a dip in metal on the rim. Could explain why your coin is underweight. Collecting is personal, so if you are happy with it, that's all that matters. We only give our opinion. I certainly wouldn't have graded this coin. Now, if this one was in a really good condition and underweight, that would have been different. Cheers Report this Post to the Staff

I understand mint tolerances on a Wheat cent is +-.13 grams, and yours is .4 grams. Not a huge difference but enough to get your attention.. As stated, more than likely a rolled thin planchet. That is the process for producing the flat sheets of metal from which they punch out the blanks. Sometimes these sheets get too thin and produce underweight planchets. Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow. Report this Post to the Staff
