I just got this coin and this is what you should NEVER do to a coin. This is a very rare die marriage (WB-3) and one that I have been looking for quite a while. To me this is one of those coins that you buy in whatever condition you can.

Sorry I am a new member to the forum first post. But I have to ask looking through many posts and absolutely loving the Seated coinage. What exactly should someone never have done to that amazing coin?

Even though it looks cleaned, it's still a very nice coin. Nice Find!

What is it that tells you that the coin is cleaned not simply circulated and toned?

It was harshly cleaned leaving thousands of hairlines, you can see them best on the reverse running down from left to right.
