I recently came across this nickel in a 20th century nickel collection. I noticed the "d" was in an unusual place on the coin and not below the five cents. I initially thought perhaps it was damage from circulation, but the letter appears to be punched. Any thoughts?

That's not a mint mark . The coin took a couple of hits in that area pushing the metal to form what looks like a D .

That appears more than a hit, but a puncture. Ouch.

edit: Where are my manners? Welcome, vintagegirl.

I can certainly see why you would ask. Keep searching. We have folks report neat finds here almost every day.

Appears to be something the Bison did. Not a mint mark.
