Just received this. Couple things stand out that look like it could be a proof? I can only hope.

Great coin but doesn't look like proof. Nice natural toning I would say

There is a die marker on every single 09' VDB matte proof. There would be a die scratch from the back of the vest to the field under the 'T' of LIBERTY. Besides it lacks other confirming feautres such as, but not limited to, sharp squared off rims, strong rim fins, extreme detail of the back hair and beard. In addition the reverse is Middle Die State, all 09' VDBs in MDS have a die crack that runs from the rim to the lower 'B' of VDB. Due to these factors, it cannot be a matte proof.

This comes up a lot because the early 1909 VDBs were usually very well made with good spacing and the dies were not overused. I understand completely why you would ask. They are very nice coins.

I think it is a circ strike.

However; Dave Bowers sold a 1909 VDB proof at auction many years ago that came from an intact set. He made mention that this coin ( in his sale) did not have any of the die markers of the known VDB proofs "But undoutedly this coin is a proof with impeccable provanance".

Not a proof without the diagnostics. Looks to be AU-63.

Beautiful coin, but I agree it's probably not a proof.

It's CCF slang for a slider. It means it's either AU-58 or MS63, a tossup grade.

It is certainly a nice coin but don't let that lead you into thinking it may be a proof.

By all means investigate it's provenance to help support it being a proof, but if no evidence can be found, I agree with the others in this thread that it is just a nice business strike.

I've seen and owned quite a few that had me guessing too. If the OP does a search, this topic has been extensively posted on CCF.

The hubs/dies were brand new in 1909. Most of the coins produced were very well struck and many with proof-like characteristics are out there. Here's one in my current collection - square rims, frosted fields and even proof-like toning.
