I've bought several large cent coins on ebay lately and have read that the Chinese are very adept at manufacturing "fakes" which unfortunately can wind up with the unwary collector.
As a trusting and somewhat part time collector, I weighed the various Large cents to see if they varry from the official gram weight. Some were "right on" and some varied by as much as 4% or 5%. Is that cause for alarm, or does the coin actually loose that much weight in circulation over the years.

Please "weigh" in on your opinions?

Thanks

I suspect that loss in weight is due to wear.

show us photos BEFORE you buy. We have experts on every type of coin, token, currency, and medals. Although we do tend to congregate around US coins.

Show us photos, one coin per post, and we can evaluate the coins you've already purchased.

to the CCF

To my experience, questions revolving around specific coins will garner more member attention than those on general topics. A pic's worth a thousand words ....

There is no "official" tolerance range for the pre 1837 cents, but for 1837 - 1857 the tolerance is .454 grams which is 4%. One of the best methods for Counterfeit Detection is identification of the die variety. While recently they have started actually using the correct obv/rev die pairings, for MANY years they used an undated hub to create obverses of many different dates, and used the same rev hub/die for every year. They did this for Half Cents as well. You can find counterfeit draped bust Half Cents for every year from 1800 to 1808 with the rev of 1804 C-6.

A coin that has lost 5% of it's weight due to wear would probably be a slick.
