I am awaiting grade opinions in another thread but wanted to first say that I verified this sample to be a WB-103.

The PUPs are too tiny and require more resolution than my camera will provide. They do, however, closely match the photos on page 144 of 315 under '1868-S WB-3, High date' in

My question to pose is if this coin's grade would bring adequate $ to justify a TPG based upon Coinfacts, '1868-S 50C WB-3 High Date Very Small S (Regular Strike)' located at:

https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin...small/800889

The only problem is that it appears that no past auction prices are available on CoinFacts...

Please let me know how you would figure this one out.

mdpmedia, a few comments.
1. There is no such variety of WB-103 for a 1868 S Half Dollar, this coin is a WB-101, WB-8
2. What is "PUPS"?
3. The value for a VF Details for an 1868 S Half Dollar is around $75-$125.
You can look at past sales on HA.com or do a search on sold listings on ebay to get an estimate of what people are paying.

Correct, it should be called WB-3.

Even without showing these tough close-up shots my coin does not show an 8 peeking up through the denticles: a WB-1 dead on feature.

My coin shows every feature that the WB-3 variety lists on page 144 of the book referenced earlier.

Also, the WB-8 should have:

1) heavy clash lines across Liberty's lap and beneath Liberty's elbow in the drapery,

2) a heavy horizontal die line in the feathers of the Eagle's upper left wing. Since it is a recessed area, this die ine should be visible on EDS to LDS coins grading at least VG.

My coin does not show these two primary WB-8 features.

If you could provide clearer close up images then it would be better and would help to identify the correct marriage.
Take a look at the following images with added redlines to help diagnose the die marriage. Date and mintmark are the best way to determine the correct die marriage. Here is a closeup image of the reverse B for WB-3,

Here is your image,

I am using the reverse because it is the only reverse where the MM is located. The red line shows straight up the middle between the olive branch and arrow feathers. WB-3 is close but just to the left and is not centered in the crotch.
For the date, the placement is almost the exact same for both marriages except that for WB-8 it is a tiny bit closer to the rock. This is almost impossible to tell unless you have the coin in hand and have the correct way to measure but if you look at the bottom left of the "1" and went straight down there is a little difference. On the WB-8 it is on the right most side of the dentil and almost in between. The WB-3 is a little more to the right, not much difference but should be able to be seen under a loupe.

Great, Thanks for the closeups and I would have to say that it is a WB-8. Your coin does have the die line in the reverse wing and the clashing on the obverse is listed as a LDS which It looks like your coin might be a MDS. Your coin does not have the die cracks on the reverse near the end of the arrow.
Here are pictures from a WB-3 with red mark ups.

Mintmark looks to be too far right to be rev B.
