Excuse me for being naïve on this as I'm not an error or variety collector ,but why would the mint repunch a MM in the first place ? Was it done by accident or ?

Pre 1990 the MM was applied to each working die by hand. If the first attempt was in the wrong place or not set deep enough they would repunch it,hence RPM.

Before 1996 , all dies reqired multiple impressions by the hub to bring the design to completion. The act of each hubing will harden the die so that it had to be softened in between. The mintmark puch had to be used multiple times as well. Because of this , rpm's and certain classes of doubled dies were able to be created.

The date John stated is the cut off for rpms. Not the 1996 I stated for dd's

John1 is right. If it wasn't deep enough or in the wrong place, they would have to do it all over again.

Sometimes punched upside down, sideways, etc., and re-punched as well. Also, the dies may pass from one mint to another and the MM may have been changed, thus the D/S or S/D varieties.

An RPM can also be caused by the mintmark punch bouncing on the die in response to being hammered.
