Greetings again. This is really a Part 2 post of this 1913 Type 2 Buffalo nickel already on this thread, posted 8/23/19 (1913 Type 2 Buffalo Head Nickel Toned (My 2nd 1913).

It is long with a lot of writing/pictures. If you are one who hates that? Move on I guess. Or just do like people do with certain magazines....just look at the pictures :-) Worth that at least. OK...

I decided to make this a fresh post to get fresh exposure for those who replied on original post, for any new comers, and it really is a new approach/info for this subject. Hope that is not an issue for community rules.

OK.so being the amateur still, but upping my game, I supplied pictures with different light, and 100X magnification for my nickel Chin 'Spot' issue. New toy acquired. Amazing results really IMO. No doubt you can all see it now. And some other crazy pics I supplied below. If anything, interesting to be sure. At least to me. So...

1. First you see the original pictures of the nickel I posted in Part 1 post (original). Matte looking toning. Almost AT looking. Too nice.

2. Then you see a number of pictures with different lighting/angles. To help see toning and Spot by chin. However, these pictures show the more realistic iridescent luster. Yes, major cartwheel luster action and changing colors like a 3d hologram. Says to me authentic. Though you won't see any cartwheeling. Lol Gorgeous really in your hands if you could see it, IMO. Pictures still lack real luster.

3. Then pictures magnified 100x with LED microscope. Spot is clearly 'raised' as some had asked. Rust color generally. Hope to have removed by NCS (Conservation) prior to grading. If its deemed Details for whatever reason, so be it.

4. Other pictures below the spot pics, are some crazy items I found attached to the surface of the nickel. Take a look. Very cool IMO.

5. Last picture is a PCGS MS67 1913 Type 2 nickel (Left), next to mine (Right), which sold for $7050.00 at Heritage auctions. @_@ So here we go. I added some more 'word smithing' to each picture where I felt needed.

My goal is to see what that spot really is, get it cleaned up professionally (NCS), if possible, then off to grading @ NGC. Again.if DETAILED? Still a nice coin to display. All this also to provide some interesting info/pics in the interim. Will help with my future posts.unless I get kicked off. Never know. TMI maybe. Comments welcome as always. Be nice. & Enjoy

Here's my original Pics from original post. Note the MATTE toning look due to lighting used:

Below are a number of pictures at different lighting and angles. Chin anomaly obvious:

Below pictures are 100X magnification of the 'Spot'. Open to all opinions of what it is. Potential theory: IF, and if, it is AT.could this have been a chemical AT drip/drop gone bad, that solidified, and nickel now became a bust from the original owner? Discarded as an original premium coin, but now looking for a sucker (me) to buy it? I paid pocket change for it though. Lol It has all the colors of the toning on the nickel, but that could be just it got toned around that spot over the years. Seller to me noted these were bank rolled for years. A 17,000+ 100% feedback coin dealer that only deals in coins. Not one Neutral or Negative feedback in last 12 months (can't see beyond that). So, confidence level was/is looking good. Again.cartwheel luster off the charts in all colors/across full spectrum.

(Note the sliver of metal (nickel?) that got 'glued' to this material that forms the spot in front of the chin. No clue. See what you think. It's crescent shaped. Also it looks like chips of this substance broke away over time. Jagged edges and shaded area where it was covering. Possibly?):

See what looks like chips of substance broken away over the years?

Next set of pics are 100X and the odd items I found. Looks like crystals of some sort. Maybe someone here knows right off what they are.

Here we have what looks like a sheep head with a black eye. This crystal is literally suspended above the surface and stuck to a slope. Just sitting there. Picture does not show both surfaces in focus, as it did when I looked through lens, but I had to focus on one of the surfaces...the slope. Any ideas what that crystal substance is? Just a FYI question:

This creature? Someone call Sigourney Weaver. because we now know where the ALIENS come from...the US Buffalo Head Nickels!! Lol Just sitting there waiting to re-animate, I guess. Lol. There were other items I saw which were weird, but this was the winner by far. God knows what I will find if I go 250X magnification, which I could. Ok. Enough of that (And no...I did not plant this stuff as a joke. It's there. Fun yes, but that would be going too far):

Couple more small crystals hiding out:

Lastly.the picture of the PCGS MS67 selling for $7050.00 on Heritage auctions. Heritage Left. Mine Right. Thanks for looking. Interested in any comments you may have concerning Spot substance/can it be fixed IYO/crystal mystery. And if fixed and grading allowed...what do you think? So far the comments on other threads gave a AU/AT/Details/Cleaned on this one, to MS67 on my other nickel, similar to this nickel, same year/type/toning (I know there is a grading thread, but just throwing it out there since all this info is here). Thanks:

I see what your trying to say about irrelevant spots really don't matter , but your entire Buffaloes head is not as strong as the 67 .

Hey T-Bop. Good to hear from you again. Well, I think its relevant (spot) if it kills the coin. lol But I'm thinking this spot can be cleaned by conservation. But I ask because this is first adventure in this arena. Not expecting 67. I'll be happy with 64/65 if it can get that far. Have lots of coins I'm preparing for launch to Grading. Even that 1916 Mercury dime I posted last year with the MD all over it. Just to get slabbed Details/cleaned (I didn't touch it), if it can even get that. And many other Mercury's. We will see. I will post results of that 1916 Merc (took forever...apologies) and this 1913 bad boy. As well as that other 1913 toned nickel you liked. And, I have another 1913, but type 1, that is unique in its own right. Very pretty. So that will be interesting to see how it fares. OK. thx for input as usual.

Would go for PCGS conservation so the process of cleaning and grading is in the same hands. That way they have an added incentive not to mess up the coin.

Total cost for conserving and grading will leave you in the red if it doesn't make 65. Anyone else think the coloring is questionable?

John: If PCGS does professionally conserve coins for a price.
When they slab the coin do they put cleaned on it and dose it lower the value of said cleaned coin?

It's quite common for Buffs & Jeff's in MS condition to take on a goldish tone . I have many . Your call .

Hello all. Yes...PCGS does the dual conservation/grading. NGC does it as well. A smooth process per their description of how they do it. They also noted that if the coin is salvageable, meaning the fix takes care of only the discrepancy, they will send over to the Graders for a legitimate grade. Meaning they will not necessarily put CLEANED/DETAILS. It can be graded as any coin in good standing. Of course if there are issues such as damage from whatever you are trying to get corrected, then all bets off. They will not 'fill in' any areas that may be eaten away from say corrosion/chips/dings/etc. Only remove any substance that is not part of the normal aging process. But it can be done as in the case of this nickel. That is again, only my amateur opinion based on what I and you see in the pictures.

NGC, as PCGS, has a number of tiers for conservation fees, but this is one below for most coins at NGC.....

Standard Conservation:

All coins. 4% Fair Market Value (FMV) ($25 minimum fee). Also select an applicable NGC grading tier. NGC grading fees additional. If NCS believes that conservation will not benefit a coin submitted under the Standard Conservation tier, it will be transferred to NGC for grading and only the NGC grading fees will apply. All coins 4% of Fair Market Value ($25 minimum fee) 20 days + NGC tier.

(Add $10 and shipping to that as well...yup)

I want to know as Coinfrog does...is this really AT, because it will affect my buying decisions in future. Because if I keep getting sold AT fake coins, I'm going to have to bust out some of my old Marine Corps tactics and set some people straight!! Lol Just Kidding. But, the money is not a problem. Worth it to me. I won't starve. And it will be good for all of us to know I would think. But I will say again...I'm with T-Bop on genuine toning. If you all were to see this coin in hand, and cartwheel in natural light...it is stunning. Luster radiating all around the surface.

I can't say from experience, but I can read, and to a fault, almost all expert AT descriptions by on-line articles/blogs/pro sites/etc., say AT will NOT show luster in that grand way, or at all. So, my being able to see it, and research, says it's genuine. AT, per those experts, and another way to say it, tends to be one dimensional and almost flat radiating wise when cartwheeled, if at all. I do wish we could post short videos of a coin to show that cartwheel effect. Really enjoy fact I can ask these questions on this site and get a broad set of opinions/advice/constructive criticism. Big help. Hence...Coin Community. Amen.

(I know I'm long winded...most of you are 'get to the point'. I like that as well...but I feel the need to be detailed as I can, and give as much info as I can, to get educated advice from those who've been around this a while....you folks. Communication/facts on the battlefield are critical. No less for this complex coin adventure. If I'm asking? I'm providing tools best I can to help that quest. So on we go).
