Quote: '' What coin has the best backside ''? Hmm, I thought this was a family forum ?
I applaud you for getting to that joke before me. Maria Thaler is a coin and it has a nice backside. I also have a friend named Maria, I wonder if it runs in the name.
I think it's odd that we all call the Indian Head Nickel a Buffalo nickel and yet it's really a Bison and it's on the reverse, not the Obverse. So is it my favorite? No but I thought I'd just stick that one in here anyway. Never really gave it a thought though as to which I like better in any coins. So few people really look at the reverses.
Best:- St Gaudens Double Eagle, with motto. The best overall coin design in the whole of numismatics, over the last 2,600 years of World coinage history. The motto below the eagle helps to balance the design to achieve complete perfection. The obverse design also has to be in the top 5. The design the St Gaudens $20 is the main reason why I had to have an example in my collection of World coins, that covers from ancient to modern.
Runner up:- Walking Liberty half, but only in MS grades. A failing of the designs (both sides), is when they are worn, a high ridge develops as the wear progresses, and tends to dominate the design to the severe detriment of the overall eye appeal.
