Hi everyone, I just spotted this coin/token for sale by a reputable dealer. The seller states that this might be an older token/reproduction (he does not claim it to be ancient). However, I am rather curious since I know that in the 17th and 18th centuries many collectors made copies for the purposes of study or gifting ancient-like art.

The dealer states that it is silver,8.00 grams, and 19mm. Is there any way of determining whether this is in fact a reproduction ca. 1600-1800?
Thanks!

Stylistically, it looks like the fakes being peddled by ebay sellers located in Bulgaria. I don't think this is more than a few years old.

Finn235;

Clearly the coin is supposed to be a denarius size. (So not sure why a Bulgarian counterfeiter would make this a full 8 grams as no denarius comes even close and the coin would never pass as a fake ancient coin.) Now that said it is not a fantasy piece, someone did copy a known silver denarius which makes this a very strange piece being 8 grams. If you are sure of the weight being about 8 grams Archraz then who knows why someone made this item.

Silver Denarius Rome mint: 201-210 A.D.
RIC 288, SEVERVSPIVSAVG - Laureate head right.
RESTITVTORVRBIS - Roma seated left on shield, holding Victory and scepter.

Finn235,louisvillekyshop,& echizento - Thanks for the help. Oh, I certainly find this to be a later imitation. And the seller is actually located in the US, rather than Bulgaria.

My interest was really in whether this piece can be identified as an older copy (ca. 1600-1800) rather than just a modern fake. I know that reproduction of actual ancient coins and the fabrication of fantasy pieces was very common in early modern Britain and continental Europe. However, in the case if this coin, if it is a modern piece, then it is just junk.
