Ok my thoughts are whirling now.......

I think I have "Wrong Planchet Coin" that was rejected?

Gotta find a coin in that weight range?

Recalibrated my scale and low and behold it was off by .06g? So the "waffle" actually weighed 1.70g

SORRY- finally put my glasses on!

I think you are just seeing pitting and damage. It can sometimes look like letters or shapes. As for the weight, the coin will be under the normal for a copper cent, but I'm sure that most of that will be from wear.

The details of the coin look like it was subjected to an acidic environment at some time. It may have been buried for years or exposed to acid. It doesn't look like all of the rim is there.
