Hi Guys

I am Mike and I am a newbie in ancient coins. For now I am not collecting but instead trying to learn and improve my skills in identifying fakes. I came across this link in Zeno and I believe the coin is genuine but corroded and crystalized. What do you think? I don't think cast can create this type of criss-cross patterns.

This one looks suspicious to me. It looks like a modern fake.
Your best bet when buying is to use one of the larger dealers that specialize in Ancient coins. You may have to pay a little more but it is much safer using their expertise in this field.

I agree with the comments on Zeno - I think it is a modern fake.

More importantly than the surface pattern, the facial details are far too "soft" for this issue - Just about all of the Ardashir drachms I have ever seen are quite crisp with excellent strikes

Thanks for replies. So if the ardashir coin is fake, then this coin is also fake because it has same type of criss-cross surface (Note the magnified image)

I agree the Ardashir I coin does appear to be a fake, the Vahram II is genuine.

There is a sticky section here titled: Books, downloads and websites which will help you learn about all types of ancient coins.
