Could someone help out a newbie to coin collecting? I see all these graded coins and someone said that there are really only 3 recognized coin grading companies and yet I see many more than that. Like ngc and others that are on ebay. sgs ect please help I don't want to waste money on overpriced coins just because someone has the ability to encapsulate a coin. Thanks for any advice.

I really must throw in ICG here, as it is also recognized on ebay and many (myself included) do feel it is a better grader than ANACS. Again psalm9152, you can depend on these 4 companies being close, some a little stricter than others, but they do give security in buying IF IF IF

IF there is a good return policy and very high feedback %. Because you are not buying a slab companies reputation....you are buying the coin! and often you can't tell if it is worth the money until you have it in hand.

PCGS, NGC/NCS, ANACS, and ICG are recognized by ebay as third party graders and can be sold as "certified". You could also add a new company called DGS to the list(they recently purchased the old PCI and are owned by David Lawrence Rare Coins), PCI and SEGS(not the same as SGS) are also legitimate companies but their standards tend to be a bit more lax, especially on moderns.

I've been with PCI for many years having them grade my coins. I will be using DGS now and in the future.

I STILL LIKE RAW for coins under $100. There is much to be said for TPG it affirms your opinion ,bot then again it's fun to grade your own.

I would stick to the NGC and PCGS graded coins. They are accurate and have attractive holders.
