http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WA:IT&ih=004I returned this 1928 Peace dollar to the seller 2 weeks ago because it was a counterfeit (altered 1928-S). The coin did not show any of the known characteristics of the 3 known obverse dies and also under a loupe, had tooling marks where the S mintmark was removed. This finding was confirmed by a well respected local NGC coin dealer. The seller was informed of this and had granted me a refund (which I have to receive). So... no refund yet and the seller has the nerve to relist the coin as genuine. Edited by 1sikevo 09/17/2008 03:37 am

I would report it to ebay immediately. Doubtful that they will do anything, but it's about all you can do. Have you completed feedback yet? Might not hurt to have a feedback "Counterfeit '28 Peace dollar" sitting on the top of his/her feedback!

Wow, I'm surprised because I always had considered this seller to be very reputable, though I personally have not bought anything from them. Might wait to get the refund before leaving the feedback, probably leave as a neutral though and not a negative if you get your money back. Then report to ebay.

The seller himself took it down, not ebay. It could be that someone that works for him just saw a return and relisted it, then he saw it and killed it. Extremely possible nothing "shady" was intended.

Please keep in mind that the most honest sellers make mistakes. I have certainly made my share without ever intending to defraud anyone. The seller removed the auction him/herself. In this case, I think the seller should be given the benefit of the doubt.

The seller may have yanked the auction but their defense of the listing in the Q&A section of the auction troubled me- I am a PCGS and NGC certified dealer, a member of the ANA and a member of the North Florida Better Business Bureau with a 100% rating. I am, I believe, a "top-notch" dealer and had several other "top-notch" dealers look at it as well. If you want the coin and you have it certified and it comes back not authentic I will refund your purchase price. This seller is quick to tout affiliations and claims to have had "top notch" dealers look at it but they missed the fact that the mint mark was removed The simple fact is that even with the refund guarantee, a buyer would still be out money spent on a grading fee and shipping costs- I do not see the seller reimbursing for that. It seems like a seller that is unwilling to eat the original cost for purchasing an altered key date coin and now wants to shove it off on some unsuspecting sap but will refund/pull listings when questioned too hard

From my original post(in the grading forum): Quote: Returning this coin due to questionable authenticity. I see a very light discolored spot under the "O" in one on the reverse, suggesting that a mintmark (most probably an "S") was removed. The bottom part of the "O" is also more worn that the rest of the letter. Also, none of the die characteristics from the 3 known dies are present on the obverse. Since I'm new to Peace dollars, I got a second opinion from a nearby NGC certified coin shop, Redmond Rare Coins. The two owners inspected the coin and told me to return it. That afternoon, I picked up an 1885 V nickel that I purchased from Gene Henry, who happens to be the largest wholesale dealer of coins in the Northwest and contributor to "The Red Book". He noticed the tool marks where the mintmark was and told me to return it too.

Good job, the auction has been taken down. Perhaps the sellers conscience got to him and didn't want the bad press.
Take Care Ben
