Although I have spent many years collecting other rare historical items, I am new to collecting coins. My experience in other arenas has taught me to look for certain tell tail signs of modern (fake) manufacture. I suppose I also enjoy the constant learning that is a part of these hobbies.

Anyway, recently I purchased a 1755 LM Peru 8 Silver Reales coin. After getting it in hand, there are a couple of things that cause me pause. I am wondering if some of you see the same concerns.

When comparing my coin to the 1758 example on NGC's website (https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...id-1510435), I noted the following on my coin:
* The hook on the Q seems off/to flat
* The base of the fleurs-de-lis seems to flat/under defined
* The ribbing around the outer ring of the coin (not sure what to call it) does not appear to have a break/meshing point from manufacture
* The M in the LM may be off (missing the well defined line through the middle right)

I am not sure if these variances could be the result of a different die. Any help or insight you might be able to offer would be much appreciate.

Thanks,
The new guy

Are there any books anyone would recommend on the topic? Perhaps with photos of the different reales during that time period?

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of Spanish Colonial silver. The best book out there is probably "The Milled Columnarios of Central and South America" by Frank Gilboy. However good luck finding a copy, it was a very limited printing of only 500 copies back in 1999. Your coin looks okay at first glance, I personally am unable to authenticate a coin from a couple of pictures. It would be nice to get the weight and some close up detail pictures of the edge design, looking for overlaps 180 degrees apart in the design.

JFransch appreciate the recommendation. I will get some better pics tomorrow when I get back from my work trip.
