The Type II Gold Dollar has been a vacant space in my type set. I've been tempted to pick up the 1854 or 1855 to fill the hole but always felt they were overpriced in mint state and too common in circulated grade. That leaves the branch mint issues as candidates. The 1855-D is extremely expensive. The 1855-C is more affordable but still above my budget for this type coin. That leaves the 1855-O or the 1856-S as my options. The 1856-S is more scarce at only a little more money and has special distinction as the only 1856-dated Type II coin. This example came up for sale and I went for it.

This piece is well-struck for the type, has nice color and a hint of proof-like flash. I found it difficult to get acceptable photos of this tiny coin. The hairlines that look obvious in the photos are almost invisible in-hand. Overall I'm very satisfied with this coin.

what are your comments and grade opinions?

I'm not a gold person but the coin has the detail of an AU50 or possibly 53 coin. I don't think the scratches affect it too much as these coins are very soft and easily scratched once in circulation. Rare piece and I think a nice addition to your collection.

Beautiful and low mintage was it slabbed? Not a gold person per se but dont like the color I see in the photos on the top of the reverse is that just a glare or what?

AU-53 sounds about right, but I'm no expert here.
Rest in Peace

AU-55. It looks 53 but I looked at hundreds of type two before I finally found one myself and the strike consistency was a major problem.

I would have thought that with a small gold coin there should have been great strikes all. The exact opposite is true. Strikes are terrible, especially on the center of the reverse.

Finding one of these drove me crazy. I looked at hundreds in the 50-63 grade range and the one I finally found had the best strike I've seen.

The hairlines really do knock a point off your eye appeal, I think, but I'm sure they are nearly invisible in hand.

Regardless, you waited for a tougher date & mm which paid off. I've never seen any coin you've posted that I didn't like and this one continues that superior presentation.

I agree with Mox on AU-55. The hairlines are probably not an issue and it straight graded.

The actual color is pretty well represented in the photos. I think it is original, not dipped or otherwise messed-with. The reverse shows some faint orange areas which I believe are copper spots from irregularities in the planchet alloy. There is a darker iridescent toning spot at 11:30 at the reverse rim; again, this looks like a natural feature.

Grading is think is conservative but fair at AU-53. I'm more than satisfied with this Type II example for my type set.
