Quick question for penny experts. Was looking at wide 'AM' for 1988-D. During that I found mint mark in place not shown on Variety Vista. 1. Variety Vista Mint variety's show RDV-006 for the 1988-D, Die 1, Die 2, Die 3...but none show the 'D" way over to the left, almost touching the '9' tail. There are pictures of 1988-D copies on net similar to my two in this post, so they exist. Just curious why not on Variety V? Here is link: http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20...DRDV0061.htm2. And the wide 'AM' question. Both of these are Wide AM, but so are many others. PCGS in price list has a 1988-D Wide AM as a separate variety. This is not a huge deal but would like to know. Thx. THREW IN THESE MAGNIFIED 'D' OF THE ONE NEAR TAIL OF '9'

Both of your cents have the normal reverse for that year. Dumbest thing ever to call them Wide AM's they are all wide until 1993 where the reverse was designed to have closed AM's. 1992 had some closed AM's but are rare. As far as the mintmark being in a different location, they were hand punched until 1989. The mintmark placement could be in any position until the mint Mark was made into the die itself.

Got it. Agreed. AM called out, when all really are. Strange that PCGS identifies one as Wide as if it's rare or scarce. Hmm. And understood on mint Mark. Did not know that. Hand punched till 89. Ok. That's that. Moving on.

What makes them rare is actually the FG is different. They changed the font up slightly and the designers initials are different starting in 1989. A few 88's were minted with 89 reverses.

This, and then for some unknown reason PCGS added Wide AM to the description and confused a LOT of newbie by making them think that if they had a 1988 D with a Wide AM they had the good one even though ALL the 1988 D cents are Wide AM.
