I find this one hard to believe, so if you don't, I can understand why. After chortling, I would love to know how you think these got there.

Last Friday, I stopped at the bank and picked up two $25 boxes of cents for the weekend. I was so excited that Monday morning I was at the bank when they opened and picked up 4 more boxes.

What was so interesting? Mint perfect (AU and MS) mirror bright red coins starting in 1959 and running thru 1979. These things are just about perfect. I took pics with my wifes camera (mine was stolen) and as soon as I get them uploaded on the computer I will post them.

There were 104, total, and include most every date between 59 and 79 and all mints. I will list all dates and mints when I get the pic up.

My question is why and how. These were general run of the mill circulated rolls with Wheats being found, too. Over half of the coins came out to the first two boxes and the rest spread evenly over the last 4. I have gone back and gotten 4 more, since, and they have produced one coin. they have petered out.

I have always wonder about the varying populations of coins found at times in boxes, and believed that they had to be added. By this, I mean an unusual amount of a certain date showing up all at once. I remember one box in particular from a year or two ago, that had 200 plus 1999s in near perfect condition. Not and unusual coin, but an unusual amount.

I guess someone could have robbed their father's coin collection, but these coins are typically spent and would cycle back to who ever re-rolls these for the banks randomly and would not end up concentrated in a few boxes.

Maybe I am reaching, but I would sure like to hear your thoughts.

Thx, Jim
Rest in Peace

If the bank or one of their accounts has a coin counting machine, all it would take is someone stealing a collection and dumping them in that machine. That would result in a high concentration in that batch.

I've been seeing an unusual amount of very nice condition older cents in my change recently. My theory is that all those people with the gallon jugs of cents are cashing them in for gas money.

with both comments...

Or someone inherited a collection and did not understand why someone would keep them.

I do not think that it is terribly unusual. While doing the Cent Project last year, I found about 75 or so bright red BU LMCs from 1959-1982- no spots, toning, or fingerprints and probably 2/3 of them were pre-1970. I doubt if they came out of someone's collection because they were just ordinary RD BU LMCs- no RPMs, doubled dies, 1960 or 70 small dates, or anything else worthy of a nice premium in BU condition. I also had about 20 or so Wheaties and about 10 Canadian cents but again, nothing special. Some were scattered throughout the rolls while some rolls had 5-10. Someone might have turned in old bank rolls or a bank might have returned some old bags to be wrapped and boxed.

You just never know. I had one of my teller friends call me one day to check out some quarters she pulled out from a roll. Six of them had really glossy finish so she pulled them for me. They were proofs. Looked like someone had cracked open some sets and dumped the rest in the coin sorter. Found the proof cent in one roll from a bag of $20.

I hoard copper pennies as well as roll hunt. I go through 6-7 boxes a week. I have seen a lot of bright shiny pennies in the same basic date range. No rhyme or reason for it. I even got into a streak and scored 19 bright shiny '58-'62 and '64 (oddly there were no '63s) Canadians in Brinks boxes for about 2 weeks about a month ago, then it dried up. I'm just happy they are there to be found.

I have found quite a few also. I had to take out my red/brown Lincoln's and replace a few I thought I would never find in red. It was nice upgrading without buying them. Coindexter

I've found groups of desirable coins when searching rolls. I can't explain it either. I only wish it happened more often! I hope your lucky streak keeps going.

People are def. cashing in for gas money and cigarette money. Had a lady come in to my store one day and pay for cigarettes with a bank roll of '63 nickles and '63 cents.
God Bless,
Brad
