Numerical grade means NOTHING for a Coin with such staining.

I don't always agree with N/S, but this is a head-scratcher for sure.

An XF 17D is scarce and sells for $140. The red staining is spectacular in my opinion. It recalls how millions of bison were killed in the 19th century as the west was being tamed. I hope that it is staining and not paint or something else that dissolves in acetone. Stining is almost always black and unsightly, the blood red is spectacular imho. The coin is a full horn 17D at a 90% discount. This is one of my favorite recent pickups.

I'm with NS on this one. It was a steal of a price.

I've seen Buffalo nickels with all kinds of colors . They are like a copper coin that turns different colors from different environments .

Nice story about the blood shed by the poor Buffalos, but it still is environmental damage in my book, I'm sure it has eaten into the surface. Interesting that no one commented on the peeled lamination obverse.
