Out of my Grandpa's collection of foreign coins is this Finland 1972 S 1 MARKKA and because I know so little about the foreign minting process I had a couple of questions. The handle appears to be doubled as well as showing two distinct pommel guards at the top of the devise with the bottom of the devise thicker than that on a normal coin. On American coinage that separation showing a distinct separation is considered a Doubled Die. The handle itself is doubled and is not flattened like we see on Machined doubling on American coinage. Everything extra is rounded and not flat and shelf like. What looks like the middle toe also shows the same type doubling at the top of the devise but nowhere else. Would this be considered Machine Doubling because the foreign minting process is different than the American minting process? Could this be possibly a Doubled Die?

I dont think it is Machine Doubling. It looks like an actual Doubled Die. Either that or that's just the design of the coin. I pulled up pictures of the coin online but I cannot see one up close enough to tell if they are different than yours.

I found this image on ebay. It does not have the doubling. I believe that yours is a true DDO. The pommel guard I think is the most telling.
