Recent pick up from ccf member Finn who also helped tremendously in the script breakdown..Thanks! These are quite common coins although this one has a very nicely detailed reverse...

Nabataean Kingdom. Aretas IV (Haritat), with Shaqilath..9BC-40AD AE unit Petra mint.
Obverse..Jugate draped busts of Aretas and Shaqilath (wife) right symbol in front (S?)
Reverse..Crossed cornucopias, Nabataean script (spelling Ruler and wifes names) in 3 lines, above, between and below the horns. Aretas name in Nabataean is 'Haritat' Spelt 'HRTT' and his wife 'Shaqilath' spelt 'SQYLT' See below..
Note the Nabataean script has a consonant based alphabet with no vowel indication...

The Nabataean capital Petra...Here's a nice little website..https://www.amnh.org/explore/ology/...ins-of-petra
The Nabataeans were quite unique in their day, never being conquered by the Romans in battle. They achieved this by basically leaving their stone carved oasis, whenever the Romans came, and moved out into the middle of the desert living nomadically in tents. They just waited until the Romans got bored or realised it was pointless being there and when the Romans pulled back they simply returned to their city..
It wasn't until the Nabataean ruler Rabbel II died in AD106 that the kingdom became an annex of the Roman empire by emperor Trajan without a sword being drawn..
Below are a couple of photos of the treasury and the royal tombs..

Always liked, but never collected, this series. Nice pickup, Paul, and good write-up.

Nice coin with excellent detail. I have a few of these. Amazing how they were able to have such a beautiful city as Petra in the middle of the desert.

You know I approve

Worth mentioning of course that this coin's reverse is exceedingly well preserved and struck for the type - the most crisp I have ever handled in hand, and one of the best of the examples I have seen online.
