Can you tell me something about this 1983-D cent? Is it an error coin? It's not RD, RB or BN.

It looks like a 1943 steel cent.

Unfortunately, there are multiple scratches on the obverse.

If the zinc core is exposed the coin has probably been altered either with acid or some other chemical .

the details do not look to me like it was struck on an unplated planchet .

the coin looks brown in the pictures you may want to adjust your white balance and try them again ?

I hope these pics show the silver color and not brown. They are definitely not brown.

There are a few reasons why a cent would be silver in color.

-It's struck on a dime planchet - this usually messes with the edge details yours doesn't look like this

I'd bet yours is one of these:
-It's missing the copper layer leaving only the zinc exposed
-It's silver plated as a novelty item
-It was messed around with in a chemistry class - different chemicals can make the coins appear gold or silver in color.

I'll go along with that one. Ive known kids that do all kind of things in labs to coins, then scratch, or write something on it so as it circulates they'll know it if it shows up in change.
