I was at a Boston area estate sale over the weekend and threw a bucket of coins I found on my pile. Turned out to have over 40 wheats in it, along with some interesting errors, including this one. I'm calling this the JW Booth Cent, due to the unfortunate placement of the hole on the face of the coin. (groan) Obviously it has some post mint damage, but it sure looks like something got between the back of the coin and the die. It made a nice deep chasm on the back, and looks like it affected the structural integrity of the coin face to the point where his upper cheek and forehead are distorted and of course the bloody great hole in his noggin. Would love to get your opinions. Also, I'm wondering if you think whatever it was is still lodged in there? Thanks in advance!

This coin was damaged, probably intentionally. Just worth copper melt now. It didn't look like that when it was struck that way.

At first glance this coin looked like it might have been a strike through, but a quick look at same area on the flip side shows it just damage.

Most of the time you can tell a coin is damaged just by looking at the opposite side. If the coin has an area that's been pushed in on the reverse, like this coin, you'll see an area that's pushed out on the obverse.
