Help Identifying Possible Arab-Sassanian Tabaristan Coin

radial New Member United States 7 Posts	Posted 10/13/2019 1:41 pm Hello, I'm trying to identify these two coins, due to my lack of resources and the difficulty in reading the markings on the coin, I'm unable to tell definitively the era of this coin. My guess is that they are Arab-Sassanian. Judging from the images I've seen on google, this one appears to be of the Dabuyid dynasty of Tabaristan. Again, I'm having great difficulty reading the markings, but they look similar to those on the examples of seen of Gil Gavbara and Farrukhan the Great. Can someone kindly confirm? This one here, I have even more trouble trying to make out the markings. If I'm not mistaken, on the left hand side in the periphery of the coin, does it not say in Arabic script "Umar?" If so, then would this not be from the Umayyad Caliphate? I have one last question, these two coins I've posted on here look in decent condition...as in, I don't see many signs of aging. Could they be forgeries? I apologize for all the questions in one thread, I'm trying my best to learn this process and online resources can only go so far in teaching. Thanks very much! Its nice to know that my guess was not far off on the time period of these coins. Just to confirm, the first coin in my post is in fact Farrukhan the great, correct? If you don't mind me asking, what resources did you use to decipher the text on the coins? I have a 2 books on Sassanian coins, but they are a bit lacking in information when you get to the Tabaristan coins. Nor do the books tell you how to read the script yourself. I mostly relied on google searches and matched the similarities. It would be great to have an easier way to do this. Since you've already been kind enough to help my identify these coins, could I get your opinion as to the authenticity of these coins? Although the coins do show signs of wear and aging, is there any reason to feel that they are not genuine? Thank you again for all of your help! Report this Post to the Staff

Sasanian dates are notoriously difficult and I may be mistaken. Compare examples of both 75 and 76 on Zeno. https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=5611 I would also like to note that the coin of 'Umar with the full patronymic in both Arabic ('Umar bin al-'Ala) and Pahlavi (AWMR BWNW ALA) is a rare type, known only dated 125. Most coins of this governor have either Arabic 'Umar or Pahlavi AWMR without the patronymic in the field before the bust. Note also the unusual fleurs-de-lis on the reverse Album rates the full patronymic type as rare (R) but issues of 'Umar as a class, common (C).
