I have a roll of 1976 Ike dollars no mint mark given to me by my family. What I wanted to know is why does the slide magnet to test for silver work on them like it does on the 1976 silver ones I have and other silver coins? TY

Does the edge show as silver or can you see the copper layer?

Quote: Does the edge show as silver or can you see the copper layer? If they are silver, they would be silver clad, and they still have a copper layer. You need to wiegh them.

Also, all silver Ikes will have an S mint mark and weigh 24.59 grams. The clad coins weigh 22.68 grams and clearly show a copper core at the edge.

Quote: . They core is much grayer It can turn a really nice gold color too, and I've seen a few that look fairly similar to the business strike, but I agree you usually can see the difference.

The copper silver clad layer looks very different than the copper nickel coins. It's easy to tell them apart. Unless they've been platted.

You can post the video if you'd like, though make sure you embed it if you do. I don't think I can help you as to the reason why it slides, but I wouldn't drag a magnet on them, it will ruin them. Someone else more metallurgically inclined might be able to.

Quote: Looks like a copper core to me. Me too, I suppose he could be using a rare earth magnet, which would make the copper seem weakly magnetic. "The magnetic field induced in the metal attracts the falling magnet, creating resistance."
