I have a roll of 1976 Ike dollars no mint mark given to me by my family. What I wanted to know is why does the slide magnet to test for silver work on them like it does on the 1976 silver ones I have and other silver coins? TY

Does the edge show as silver or can you see the copper layer?

If they are silver, they would be silver clad, and they still have a copper layer. You need to wiegh them.

Also, all silver Ikes will have an S mint mark and weigh 24.59 grams. The clad coins weigh 22.68 grams and clearly show a copper core at the edge.

Correct. They core is much grayer because of the 20.9% silver, but still there.

It can turn a really nice gold color too, and I've seen a few that look fairly similar to the business strike, but I agree you usually can see the difference.

Except the one that sold for 200000$.

And, actually, there a couple that were accidentally made with the wrong planchet

The copper silver clad layer looks very different than the copper nickel coins. It's easy to tell them apart. Unless they've been platted.

They all weigh 22.57-22.89g so not silver by weight I guess but magnetic works on them? They do look copper on sides. I can post a video showing magnet slow slide just like 1oz walking lib I have.

You can post the video if you'd like, though make sure you embed it if you do. I don't think I can help you as to the reason why it slides, but I wouldn't drag a magnet on them, it will ruin them. Someone else more metallurgically inclined might be able to.

Looks like a copper core to me.

Me too, I suppose he could be using a rare earth magnet, which would make the copper seem weakly magnetic.
