Benvareen, let's not tap-dance around the issue - Is that the real look of the coin? If you can stage another photo shoot with different lighting (maybe a Kleig light), perhaps we can give a better review of the performance.

FortCollins - I think the die cracks look different because Ben's coin is a later state than mine. His has a die crack at 4:00 to the leaf that is not on mine. If that black area is silver cancer, then it could have eaten the missing stem. It sure looks strange if that's the real colour. Maybe cleaned then retoned and corroded. Thus the request for more photos. Okiecoiner - I have hundreds of coins with varieties, errors, cracks and clashes, so this one never popped up on CCRS or here- too often here, if the coin's not $$$ then the post sails to oblivion. I posted about an error un sou a while back and not one response, so with a Victorian dime in GOOD condition with die cracks, I wouldn't have bothered just to show it for my satisfaction. Since it helped solve a problem, I bothered. As for where did my coin come from; I checked back in a couple of my old Charltons and found it wasn't circled in the Winter 1980 issue, but was circled as GOOD at $6.50 Cdn. in the Summer 1981 issue (hope I bought it before the 1981 one came out - $5 in the 1980 issue, usually paid 60-70% at the coin store on St Hubert St. in Montreal {was run by a very "portly" man at least 1970's to 90's}). I kept it all these years just because it had those cracks - took only 39 years for it to become a teaching tool. I only bought a better grade from ebay this September.

sorry everyone , I struggled to figure out how to add new photos for over an hour so will have to try again tomorrow. I also have to guaranty to everyone that this coin is authentic and never cleaned as it was found in the ground! It is as found other than some sink water washing away the dirt without rubbing!! After some closeups I also see a die crack over the crown which will show up when I figure out how to put new photos on.

I think they are big die cracks but am no expert on these. Nice coin.

Ding Dong Ding Dong !
No die crack on mine at the crown - another sign it's a later die state, thus more or bigger cracks. The two large die cracks are worn a bit flat from circulation. Scratches look to be from ordinary circulation. Scrapes on the 1 and C (maybe from your shovel). Corrosion from being in the ground probably ate the missing stem. Looks to be VF of some kind but value would be very hard to figure out with the environmental damage.

well I think I will send it in to ICCS as mentioned by okiecoiner . I hope it will answer more questions and maybe I can get a guesstimate value of this "in my opinion" haha awesome coin. I will definitely let everyone here know what I learn when I get it back but it will probably take me another week before I can ship it. In the meantime I will keep checking back here incase someone gives me a better idea. Thanks everyone so far.

I didn't recommend that you send it to ICCS ... I said, that if you wanted to get it cert'd, then send it only to ICCS. Any other TPG would body-bag it and send it back ungraded. This is due to the heavy cleaning (some nasty scratches there) and the surface environmental damage. You may spend more getting it cert'd & mailed than the coin would ever be worth, depending on whether ICCS would also even give it a grade.... they normally do not take into account, seriously, what the surface and fields actually look like, but they might not grade it either. On a lighter note, where did you come up with the moniker benvareen? That's the name of a famous dancer/celebrity from a good number of years ago.

Well my name is Benoit (french name) and also my mom's maiden name but everyone just calls me Ben but guys at work always make up names which have been benvareen, benjammin, "ben her" and others so a few of them get used as usernames. Mostly benjammin and benvareen. And thanks, I get saying about the corn but I still think it's a pretty rare and significant find especially because it's my coin haha

I think it's nice coin, I don't know a value but suspect it would sell pretty easily, very little wear. And I also like the color.
