My wife and I found this penny the other day. Thought nothing of it, but after closer examination, we were curious how this sort of damage could happen to a coin. Was it struck-through grease, or is this just some sort of PSD?

It looks like a minor Struck Through Grease cent. The slightly hazy look at the rims is common on grease strikes. How does the reverse look? Any grease there?

Also figure in polishing that reduced the size of the devices. The single squeeze dies have a low profile, and then if the die was wiped down with a cloth, then it moves the grease into the devices, filling some. So more than one event can happen to a coin.

The reverse looks fine. It's in pretty good condition aside from the obverse side.

EDIT: Forgot to say thank you to everyone!
