While I had a ver, very, very small coin collection before the Statehood Quarters came out I now have way to large of a collection according to the wife.

I have all the 1st day covers from start to finish.

I have numerous poof sets of all the years all the proof sets. Yearly mint sets, silver sets, uncirculated sets. Some I have to many when the program s over I will most likely sell come of the numerous sets I have and get other coins.

I have numerous bank rolls of all the (P) and (D) mints for all the years, some I got at banks and some I purchased from ebay over the years.

In short I became a Statehood Quarter alcoholic

But the Statehood Quarter program really brought my coin collecting drive out allot more maybe to much.

I am tired to the Statehood Quarters though what I mean is having to worry about getting all the sets and rolls each year am glad to see it coming to an end.

But HELP now there are so many new programs coming the new SP quarters. President dollars, next the new pennies oh my someone help me do they have a coin collectors anominous?

If you want to see what Pikes Peak would have looked like on a quarter, check this out-http://www.dc-coin.com/index.asp?Pa...OD&ProdID=56

David Carr's beautiful design was likely passed over by Colorado's then-current Gov. Bill Owens because it wasn't lettered with "Pikes Peak" and/or "America The Beautiful".

Odds are that the design may have been 'compromised' by the U.S. Mint for production reasons (like the Maine and Missouri quarters' original designs), but even I would have added lettering "America The Beautiful" above the peak and "Pikes Peak" at the bottom of the field (ruining the purity of the design, but clarifying its 'importance' to the nation at large!)

I started two of each, silver and clad proof collection slabbed and graded pr70 for each of my daughters. I like them all, and I am very happy that they are coming to an end. I have also started the presidential sets for each of my daughters, slabbed and graded pr70. The silver eagles are all mine, ALL MINE I SAY!!

1. Do you collect singles out of circulation, or do you get BU rolls from banks and coin shops?I do my best to pull brand new coins from circulation. For the P mint coins, I have to purchase them at my coin shop.

2. Do you go for every quarter or just your favorite designs? Every last one of them, although I tend to acquire more of the designs that I like, and fewer of the designs I dislike.

3. How about proofs, silver proofs or slabbed high-grade quarters? Not interested at all.

4. Which are the five most attractive and ugliest designs?Faves: Connecticut, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arizona, Alaska. (The '08 coins were the best year yet IMHO.)
What were they thinking?!: Florida, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Kansas.

5. Did you or someone you know get their start in coin collecting through the series? I've been collecting coins for nearly 30 years now. the SQs were simply a welcomed break from the same tired and boring designs the US has issued for my entire life. (This probably has a lot to do with why I focus on Darkside coins far more than I do my own pocketchange.)

6. Do you give Statehood Quarters as gifts? I regularly trade our SQs with friends overseas, and have sent the recent issued quarters out with other correspondence as gifts. I haven't purchased any of the mint products to send as gifts however.

Quote from jbuck's post answering whether anyone started collecting because of State Quarters:
". No one that I know. I know two people that collect them, but they are still not collectors of other coins"

Thanks to jbuck for saying this.
I know a lot of people have this sentiment. You don't "qualify" if you only collect State Quarters.

I know people who collect only Lincolns and they are considered to be collectors (in fact, highly esteemed collectors). Same goes for some who collect only Morgans, and so on.

What magical threshold must one cross to become a member of the coin collecting brotherhood/sisterhood?

I've always smiled at the "nose in the air" attitude towards State Quarter collectors (there! I used the word.)

I did not intend to imply that they were inferior coin collectors, they just do not collect other coins. Neither person considers themselves coin collectors, so it cannot be said that I was insulting them. Despite my attempts, they are not interested in the hobby; the collector "bug" has not bitten them (yet). They just got a folder from their bank and started filling holes. Not that this is somehow wrong since everyone starts somewhere. Had either of them responded to my attempts to engage them in numismatic conversation, I would have made a different comment. In the end, it is whatever makes them happy, so I really have no complaints.

I often say it happens when you buy that first book or have that first real conversation with someone about the passion, but in reality each person is different and the "magic" just happens.

In all honestly, I would have to say that the several "State Quarter-only" collectors that I know personally, that they are not 'coin collectors' in the traditional sense because they are collecting them for their offspring and other relatives, and they are not collecting any type of coins for themselves (not even the State Quarters, ironically!).

I'm certainly no 'snob', but I do think that for someone to be a 'coin collector' (in the traditional sense of the term), that they would have to have a personal collection of coins, for their own enjoyment (not just saving coins on behalf of offspring and relatives!).

Indeed, many of the " State Quarter savers" may in fact become 'coin collectors' because of all this...

I was much more of a 'coin hoarder' than a 'coin collector' until recently. I know an 'Ike Hoarder' with over 3000 Ikes pulled from circulation, and a 'Wheatie Hoarder' with thousands of those in jars!
The 'true hoarders' hoard circulated coins of a beloved but common type, of which only a few particular varieties may be 'rare' (the State Quarters are prime 'hoarding' material, especially after 2010 ... )

I do enjoy that you can simply pluck nice State Quarters from circulation and put them in folder holes, staying true to the roots of this hobby.

I did not collect any because of the mintage amount of each but I think I will hunt s mint set and silver set down the road, as more hit ebay and other places.

Collect P & D from circulation only, mainly because they are different. Been collecting coins for almost 19 years, but do know people who began their first collection with the State Quarters. Do not care in the least if they will ever be worth anything. The value I get from them is the fun of collecting and looking at all the different designs. Also grabbing those funny looking nickels and the Presidential dollars...new cent when it gets out.
Don't give as gifts or want as a gift. Geez - it's only a quarter.

1. Do you collect singles out of circulation, or do you get BU rolls from banks and coin shops? Both - I have bought some new rolls from the bank and pull coins from circulation for myself and my kids.

2. Do you go for evey quarter or just your favorite designs? Every coin

3. How about proofs, silver proofs or slabbed high-grade quarters? Have every silver proof or proof set as I collect those also.

4. Which are the five most attractive and ugliest designs?

5. Did you or someone you know get their start in coin collecting through the series? I've used the program to get my kids interested in coins. My oldest just finished searching a $25 box of pennies for the wheats and pre-82s.

6. Do you give Statehood Quarters as gifts? Gave a starter set to my daughter for christmas to get her interest going.

Every qtr.

3. How about proofs, silver proofs or slabbed high-grade quarters?
I also collect the proofs and silver proofs.

4. Which are the five most attractive and ugliest designs?
Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Virginia, Maine........(ugliest ?...I won't name)

5. Did you or someone you know get their start in coin collecting through the series?
No.....started when I was a kid....
Me and my dad got my nephew started on "other material" too..(he's 12 now)..but these last few years, I've seen to it that he got started with the qtr. program and maintains the qtrs. to keep his interest going......and it works. Another "youngin'" in my life is interested in ANYTHING shiny....so I collect em' for her too.

6. Do you give Statehood Quarters as gifts?
Yes, see above....

Just Carl:So what magazines? Name some of your other articles?

3stooges I would be more than happy to help out. Except for the fact that you intend to use this info. to make money from (pay check) and you give no profile info about yourself.

Seeking:More Info. (Hope I'm not being harsh)

OK so as noted how about some info. Or is this just for fun. Actually not a bad question if for fun and interest. I really don't care if you make a million selling stories to magazines but would like to know of some that you have written for. How about the names of some articles and the magazines you work for? Just how are you planning on using the info from this post?
Not to be to nosey but way to many people ask for info and then only twist it to suit themselves. How about letting us all know about the article this post is going to form and where your going to send it? Would be nice for all forum members to be able to read the results of this situation.

I started collecting these for my daughters because, ironically enough, they were learning their states and capitals. Then I got the bug and I have several sets. Now, 'my' book gets the first shot at being filled.

1. Do you collect singles out of circulation, or do you get BU rolls from banks and coin shops? I like getting singles out of circulation; it makes the 'hunt' more enjoyable, But soon I hope to start trading with several people for Denver mints.

2. Do you go for every quarter or just your favorite designs? every one and probably will go for the 'Territories' set too

3. How about proofs, silver proofs or slabbed high-grade quarters? No

4. Which are the five most attractive and ugliest designs? I don't know, Mississippi and Oklahoma are really nice and I like Vermont. (Reminds me of reading 'Little House in the Big Woods' by Wilder when I was a little girl.)

5. Did you or someone you know get their start in coin collecting through the series? Yes, my daughters now also collect the presidents and other dollar coins (Ike's, Sacagawea's, etc.)

6. Do you give Statehood Quarters as gifts? Yep! It is really cool to give them as stocking stuffers; especially when it is one my daughters' have been searching for. They will completely overlook the expensive watch to go and put their 'gift quarter' in its place.
