I came across to 1974 D quarters and they both look different.

One has a goldish brown color to it add it is thin and the ridges are perfect you can clearly see three separate layers.

The other is silver and is thicker it also weighs around 5.66 grams it also appears to have a thick border on both sides.

Can someone please let me know if I have something special enough to add to my collection?

@AC, the darker one may have been buried in acidic soil for some time. What is its weight?

Ok yes good. That is below specification and lighter than it left the mint, but is explained by the exposure to acid. It could have been in an acid bath, but I suspect acidic soil as the surfaces are so dark. Interesting to look at so of course save if you want.

Yes no prob. If you circle back to this thread in a couple hours, I'm sure others will weigh in with their own opinions and they may have a slightly different take on things. It is always good to get multiple views.

Color is environmental exposure usually called toning. Weight differentiation may be due to circulation, or at least partially so.

Acid exposure is not a good thing. But, to each their own. Please keep looking and asking questions!
