first the lighting is not good. second the photos are out of focus. third you are taking a photo through a holder which is a little more difficult. the coin as it appears in the photo does not show as an MS68 coin, however, I cannot discount the actual grade due to above. like previously stated we can only grade based on what we see here. I would have put it in the MS66 area based on the photos
Rest in Peace

You should have posted the tru-views. It is a gorgeous example.

Our guesses as to the grade is only as good as the photos. And too, yes, it is a fact that PGCS drops the ball, over or under grading. I too would have guessed a lower grade on this dime, based on these photos

Link to tru-view: https://www.PCGS.com/cert/37303135

Even as someone who dislikes toned coins I have to say that this coin is rather nice.

However I do agree that this coin does feel somewhat over graded, though not extremely. Imo this coin is about a technical MS-66/Ms-66+ and then I would guess that this one was given the full extra point from the eye appeal bumping it to a MS-67/MS-67+, at least thats how I hypothetically would have done it.

Really depents how one would view the marks near the bottom of the torch. Aside from that however The coin looks near flawless, and I hope whomever owns it enjoys it.

(At the risk of sounding some what contrarian I actually prefer the OPS pictures to the true-views, maybe it's the plastic holder acting as a filter but I find it really nice. Obviously though if I were buying this coin the tru-views would be more telling.)

The idea that someone seeing a single picture is more of an expert than PCGS on high grade moderns is just flat out wrong. Trying to grade high MS coins from pictures is a fools errand at best especially in series and moderns where most people dabble at best.

Grading is much more complex than counting marks.

That coin is gorgeous and got the grade for a reason. FB or not there are very few 68's and it isn't a grade handed out lightly.

The best thing someone could do to help their own skills is try and learn from what they missed or the limitation of pictures, not just try and act like they know better than PCGS.

No need to try and point others as fools, the point of the thread is to give opinions on the grade, which is what has been done.

I do agree that pictures are nowhere near as telling as having the in your hands (by the rims of course)

Remember though, even the graders at PCGS had to come to an agreement on the grade, it's unlikely that each grader had thought MS-68 right off the bat. There was likely a bit of discussion between them before they came to a unanimous grade.

And yet a picture is what was given when the poster asked our opinion in the GRADING thread of this forum. Perhaps poster should have posted in another thread that wasn't asking for grade opinions if they are not open to receiving feedback. Then you would not have felt the need to make a snarky comment implying we are fools for grading based on a picture.

Words to ponder:
"It is the peculiar quality of a fool to perceive the faults of others and to forget his own." Marcus Tullius Cicero

Is still a beautiful coin regardless of the thoughts on what the label says.
