This North Carolina State Quarter was struck through heavy grease on both the obverse and reverse dies. I used overlays to locate the missing details of the coin, but I can't say with any surety where this is coin was stuck, due to the amount of grease and a well placed bag mark just where the mint mark should be. The TY letters from LIBERTY were oddly distorted during the strike, but I'm not sure how or why this happened.

That's a really cool coin! I'd also love to know where you acquired this. I'd kill for an error coin like this.

I bought most of my errors from Dallas Rare Coins back when I lived in Texas. Glen, one of the owners(?) there, would save error coins for me to look at before he put them in the case. Many of the errors were like this one in that the error was extreme and very rarely seen in some cases, because they dealt in so many rare coins from lots of sources and one person that sold them hundreds of fantastic error coins. I would say that 90% of the coins I've posted on CCF came from there.

Glen passed away years ago, but Jim the other owner is still there. They were always nice and helpful when I went in and always had time for all of my questions, back when I knew almost nothing about coins.

I've never found another coin shop like that. I spent hours in there looking at all of the coins they had, not only the errors.

If anyone knows of a nice little coin shop in the Ocean County area of New Jersey, PLEASE let me know. I always love to look at error coins.

Nice find. Probably about 65-70% grease blockage on your image.
