1866 Three Cent Nickel Shattered Die Or Retained Cud's?

It is only not connected at the top of the wreath. What is this? The first picture shows all the cracks connected on the reverse. How or why?....no idea about the minting process back then. However, I do believe it's common on these dates and coins back then... Including Shield and Liberty back then. Others will chime in...
