I bought this coin many years ago. I think it's an Overton-114, but correct me if I'm wrong. It has some damage that I would think gives it a "Details" grade. The date shows a nice 18 over 18.

Any comments or observations are welcome!

AU details, buffed/whizzed a long time ago and toned again over it. The repunched date is clearly visible.

The buffing or whizzing is not apparent to me, but the coloring is unnatural-looking I agree.

this series is difficult for me to grade due to weak strikes throughout. to me the coin looks MS. I'm going with UNC details

Curious how you determine if cleaned or whizzed?

The harsh chalk-white appearance of the devices in contrast with the toning of the fields, the halo effect around the obverse stars, the lack of luster, and the presence of "streaks", makes me think the coin was cleaned. It could be a lighting issue. Either way, it's an AU coin to me with clear and evident light rub on the upper wings and eagle's brow.

No way to resolve this unless you submit it. Endless discussion otherwise.

Thanks to everyone for the comments.

This was a "gotta have it" back when I started purchasing error and variety coins around 1992. It does have some really nice lusted left in it, mostly on the reverse, which makes me think it was over dipped. I think a PCGS grade, I'm sure it will be details, can't hurt the coins value. I paid almost nothing for it, so I'm happy just to have this nice of an example of the repunched date.

I'll shoot another set of photos to see if I can bring out the luster.
