I have just purchased a Seated Liberty quarter. Unfortunately, there is a hole in the date. I can see that it is 18X6, S mintmark. There is a huge value difference between the only two 18X6-S, 1866 and 1876. Are there any telltale signs that would indicate one way or another on my coin?

PS if I am able to borrow a digicam, I will post pics

No real discernable difference between the 1866 and the 1876 that I know of .

interesting that the hole would be on the date ? that would hang the obverse upside down .

I guess that the hole maker was more interested in the reverse being right side up .

Pics would be cool !

1853-1873 SL quarters had a weight of 6.22g and 1873(arrows)-1891 SL quarters had a weight of 6.25g. Of course in your case, the weight is useless since there is a hole in the coin reducing the weight by an unknown amount.

My books say that the 1866 was a type four coin motto added with no arrows . and that variety 4 was resumed in 1875 no arrows ?

It isn't conclusive but look at the TATE in STATES. If they almost touch at their bases then it is most likely a 66-S. If they are clearly separated then it is a 76-S. They began changing the reverse hub in 1875. All the 66-S have the old hub while most of the 76-S have the new rev hub.
