What silver do you all collect?

What's junk silver? And what's the best to get started with?

The silver I collect

Franklin halves
Roosevelt dimes 46-64
Washington Qtrs 32-64
Mercury dimes 16-45

But all silver is in my home.

Roosevelts and franklins are pretty inexpensive to start with. The bonus for the budget minded is that there are no key dates that would break the bank, like some of the other series. So in my opinion those two would be good starter sets.

Are you interested in a couple whitman/harris "Folders" for some of these sets. I have a couple that I would send for free to you. These are the push in variety where you only see one side of the coin. I upgraded to albums and don't need these any longer.

If you are interested send me an email with your mailing info.

90% silver coinage in bulk is often referred to as "junk" silver.

This would include circulated, common date Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters and Kennedy halves.

The list has really expanded into common date Mercury dimes along with Franklin and Walking Liberty halves.

It is not junk at all it's basically coins that dealers buy for the silver more than anything else.

The term and definition can be vague at times. WHen silver was higher I tossed plenty of BU coins into the "junk" buckets at work.

Hey Clembo,

Does the coin shop you work with have various dates in there Washington quarter junk bin?

I am looking for common date quarters in circulated AG-G condition to fill my albums. My local coin shop's junk silver is like 95% 1964.

The silver I collect is a part of the modern US sets I am building or have built (Jefferson, Mercury, Roosevelt, Washington, Franklin, Kennedy, Eisenhower, etc.), as well as whatever silver is needed to complete the 7070.

Hi:
How can I call them as 'junk'?
1964 Kennedy Half is 90% silver and
1965 to 1970 are 40% silver.
How much they cost now?
How can any one call them, as junk. Just wondering?

All of them and the bigger, the better!
Morgans, Peace, Seated of all denominations, a few Busties, Barbers, Walkers, Franklins, Pre-1952 Commemorative Halfs and modern commem dollars and halfs, Standing Liberty quarters and Mercury dimes.

I don't have many Washington quarters or Roosevelt dimes.

I love Canadian silver coins. There is such a wide range, because most coins in regular circulation before 1969 were in silver! I personally love to collect 50 cent pieces, and dollars. I also have a few Canadian $5 silver maple leafs. I am also thinking of picking up a few morgans and Peace dollars, and the silver halves from that era.

If you want to collect/trade silver bullion, I suggest you pick up Canadian Silver $5 rounds. They are the highest purity (.9999% pure silver), though very hard to find right now. There are also specially marked Canadian silver rounds called "privy mark", they have special marks/logos/commemorative marks on them, and cost more.

Canadian coins (.10, .25, .50, 1.00) before 1969 are composed of 80% silver, and pre-1919 coins (.05, .10, .25, .50) are composed of 92.5% silver.

It is not really "junk" as in "trash" but that they have a higher bullion (melt) value than they do a numismatic (collector) value.
Rest in Peace

I look for hole-fillers, one-of-each type coins, and just what I like - no "investment" silver. Junk coins, indeed!
