53 implies some wear. Where are you seeing it IGE?

I think the coin is also fully struck with early state dies.

53-55. There seems to be some rub on obverse and reverse leaves and the 2, but could just be striking weakness. Could be lighting, but vertical shield lines look badly struck, getting worse from left to right.

Not sure what you are referring to. The vertical lines on the shield are all fully split into 3 distinct bars in all the strips. That is as fully struck as it gets.

How would you handle a coin in circulation so that it wears only in the leaves, leaving the high point intact?

N.S. Your close up photo makes your point. And obviously, if there are higher spots on the coin than the leaves, you are right on that one, too.
Because you are correct on my areas of concern, I've got to say you found yourself a darned nice coin. $46.50 ? If you paid that for this coin at a garage sale, estate sale or the like, you are to be commended for your hunting prowess. Quite the trophy!

I'll say AU-55. Just doesn't look crisp enough for MS.

Couldn't grade higher than AU without knowING how the lustre is, however I'm somewhat concerned about that line through the motto, could it be a scratch?

There are some breaks in the surface color. The photos are not sharp even to know for sure. I can see this going 55 now, but I am just not seeing an MS coin. Maybe your new photos when it arrives will be better.
