I have a 1992 10 cents that has a 'U' mark just below the chin of the image. I have this idea that it could be a minting fault. That it was indented in the coin the same time as the indent of the designers initials RDM were struck into the coin. Is this possible? Was there any type of 'U' thing that could have fallen into the coin surface? Otherwise could this be a suspicious matter?
IMHO this is definitely a post-mint counterstamp. I have a number of denominations (mostly $1) that have thse 'letters' stamped int them. There was discussion on the Aussie site about these, with one suggestion being something about public telephones. There were other suggestions, but no consensus.
Perhaps its someone simply stamping the coins simply to watch for reactions and discussions like ours
