Small Mint Mark 1878 S Morgan Dollar Error?

Amethystman New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 11/17/2019 2:43 pm I have a 1878S Morgan dollar with a small mint mark, if you see in the picture you can tell it's small because I took a picture of another one with it as you can see by the picture, the top one is a little smaller, and not centered like the other the coin does have a little wear but you can still see that it is an s. Mintmarks were punched into the working dies by hand and more than one punch was used for the millions of coins minted annually. That is why you see different sizes, placement and orientation. An error is usually one of a kind. A different sized punch was used on that particular die so every coin struck from that particular die would have that small MM. The only other explanation is that one of them is counterfeit but you didn't supply full size photos of both sides to determine that.
