I have a 1985 D nickel with the top of the 5 in the date filled in. Based on previous feedback I would say this is a die chip. Could it be a Cud since its so close to the edge? Also, it looks like some doubling in the R and B.

I would call it a die chip because it does not touch the rim. The top of the 5 is still visible.

looks like a very late die state, a worn die, all too common on 1980s nickels

If it were a Cud the rim die and the rim would have no shape there.

The edge of the die would have to be missing to be a Cud.

Note how the rim and the edge of the die would be missing on a Cud? Just a die chip.

Seeing is always better than reading a description. When was the last time you fully read paper work on anything?
