Hi all, brand new member here :)
Have a query about an old 1912 English penny. I'm trying to ascertain if it was struck on the wrong planchet or not. It appears to be a gun metal grey/black colour, and I cannot find another coin of it's colour online. I initially thought it was environmental, but I just can't see any of the typical copper red colour on this coin such as streaks or blotches etc. I'll attach some pics of this. Out of the 1000 English/Irish pennies I have this was like the ugly duckling. There's no other penny with this colour. I've compared it against a 1916 English Penny so the difference can be seen.

@jacko40, first welcome to CCF. Second, while this isn't my direct area of expertise, I agree that the lefthand coin has a nice patina that is most likely from enviromental exposure. The coin on the right is more consistent with a cleaned coin. I wouldn't try to "improve" the coin on the left--just leave it as-is. With regard to the potential for being minted on a wrong-alloy planchet, please weigh this piece. If it is within mint specs, then it should be on a normal planchet.

I have to say they both look entirely typical of 1911 to 1926 pennies. The one on the right has had some of the patina worn off, either through heavy circulation or cleaning. The one on the left is just as you would expect one that has been out of circulation for a long time. Bear in mind they are bronze, not copper, so the natural colour is greyer than copper.

Thx for the comments guys. I just think now it's a really pretty patina that's covered then entire coin.
I received a few hundred old coins so going through them all looking for ones that stand out is fascinating :)
