I was just wondering which clad halves are worth plucking from circulation. I have a number of 1986 P's & D's and a bunch of 1983 P's, which are AU-low MS. For some odd reason I thought that these were worth saving. Are they? Or should I spend them at face on a nice coin that I know has some value?

Not sure why but the 1986 P & Ds seem to be worth a premium. My krause only lists ms-65 and above. The 83's are not special though.

leebreeze- hmmm yeah I'm not sure why I thought that the 1983s were worth a premium. And as for the 1986s, do you think that, say an MS61, is worth anything above face?

The MS supply of 82s and 83s is lower than other years since no mint Sets were issued on those two years.

So do you guys think I should keep these or I should spend them at face on a nice coin?

I think they are worth keeping. A lot of lower mintages and especially 82, 83 and 86. From roll searching, finding decent AU-MS coins from the 80s is very very difficult.

mycrob- ah, so they are worth it. how much do you think that they are worth? (I really have a hard time trusting RedBook's ridiculously high values)

Well right now, I'd say any of the low MS 80s JFKs would be $1 minimum up to a couple of dollars, depends on high high the MS rating is. Still, reasonably cheap to put together a high grade set. I can tell you it is very very difficult to put together an MS set pulling coins from circulation. I have been working on mine for more than 10 years, going through 10s of thousands of halves and I still don't have MS on some of the 80s. Maybe its geography.
I think this sleeper series will get a boost in prices, but it may take another 10-15 years. It depends on your goals of collecting. If you collecting to hope for an increase in value so you can sell in a year or two, don't bank on it for the JFK series.
Look at 1987- this was only available in mint sets, very low mintage, but the price for those coins in MS65 is maybe $5, which is crazy low.

mycrob- hmm that is very interesting that they are hard to find. In all honesty most of mine were all found at one bank over a few years. In fact I once found a complete 1983 P BU roll that was just in a paper roll.(It is now tubed though). Do you actually tend to find a lot of coins from that decade but in lower grades or are all just scarce in general?

I don't know if they're worth more but I will say that I don't encounter as many of those dates as many of the others while roll searching. There are a ridiculous number of 71, 72, 73, 74, 76. in circ still it seems like half or more of every roll is comprised of those dates.

My suggestion is to keep as many of those as you can afford. The reason is half dollars are becoming a thing of the past and many banks do not handle them anymore and that includes attempting to order them.

That is just the banks being difficult, not because of any shortage of the coins.

I keep 1982's, 1983's,1986's and 1988's. In my experience, the 1988's are actually the toughest to find of the 4 dates.
