Charles-II-Shilling-Of-1669?-Fake?
Charles-II-Shilling-Of-1669?-Fake?

This item weighs 4.8 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters.

It has 2 suspicious features:

1. The II of Carolus II is to the RIGHT of the bust, not the LEFT as illustrated in Krause.
2. The date of 1669 is said to be rare and is unpriced in Krause.

I forgot to check for casting marks on the edge (I can do that the next time I see the coin, which does not belong to me), nor have I tested it for silver content.

Can anyone comment as to what I might have here?

Six obverse bust varieties are shown in my reference:
Coincraft's Standard Catalogue of English and U.K. Coins.

None of those bust varieties
show the '11' to the right of the king's bust, (including bust variety 4, for 1669).

None of those six bust varieties illustrated
show a loop above the ribbon tails behind the King's head.

On this basis my reasoning leads me towards the judgement of
fake.

I stand to be corrected.

Ah! Your problem is it is not English but Scottish! A merk I believe - the 1669 date in these is not scarce.

The give away is the bust which is much fatter than the English version of the time.

I have been corrected.
Scotland KM# 102.1 silver Merk confirms.
All dates 1664-1674 in VG are of the same value.

Thanks for the detective work, @PaddyB

I thought that I might be missing something obvious-but I could not see it!
