I have a chance to buy 2 1899 series Black Eagles $1 silver Certs. No obvious creases, tears, folded corners or holes. The color is very good and I do not see any real drawbacks with them. They have been circulated but lightly to my eye.I am not well studied on paper but my experience says that these are above avg. That said, he wants $50 apiece for them. Looking on e-Bay, these go from no sale to over $200.

Any thoughts on these and their relative value would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, one is a lower serial# 25XXX, does that increase it's value?

One other, instead of a letter at the end of the serial#, has a symbol somewhat like a > only it is in three parts. Does this have any particular meaning and or affect the value?

Thx for any help.

Jim,

The average value of the series 1899 $1, in fine condition is @$75.00, so if these notes are in fine or above $50.00 each isn't bad. Value is also determined by the signatures on the notes and on the place of the phrase "Series of 1899". There are three different placements: 1: above the serial number, 2: below the serial number, and 3: vertical on the side of the note. Notes with the Napier-Thompson signature and the #3 placement are the more valuable.

John, if I buy them, I will post pics for you.

Thx, Ron, I really appreciate the knowledge. This is why the forum is so great.
