Quite a rare coin. RIC VII, 160 (R5); LRBC I 826a. Bruun, the author of RIC VII, could confirm only 6 known specimens of this type from Thessalonica among the collections, auctions, publications and hoards surveyed. These 6 coins belong to officinae A (3 known), B (2 known) and E (unique, Nagyteteny Hoard, 1921). Of course, others may have existed in private collections unavailable to the author and some have likely come to light since the publication of RIC VII in 1966. LRBC lists a variant with diadem (rather than bare-headed) but the treatment of the bun is a minor detail. Nice find!
