25 years ago I stumbled upon a coin that I thought was unique so I took it home and put in a "piggy" bank. Forgot about it until last night while going through some old belongings and found this coin. After doing some research I realize that there is always the chance it is a fake but I can't find anywhere on how to determine the characteristics of an original and a fake. Mine is not an "EG Fecit" and does not say "COPY" anywhere on it. It appears to be pewter, not brass or silver, and the condition looks like circulated, my assumption due to some wearing on the coin. I'll post a picture of the front and back later today.

My question is, how can you know if a dealer is honest when get something like this authenticated?

1. Check it's weight.
2. Check coin details to original - Krause usually has good pics.
3. DO NOT CLEAN OR TRY TO REMOVE ANY DIRT.
and most of all

OOPS!!

Welcome to the forum!

First, the 1776 Continental Currency dollar is a frequently reproduced design. Far more copies/reproductions/fakes exist today than authentic examples, and many were made before there was legal requirement to put the word "COPY" on copies.

If you indicate that you are not intending to sell it to the dealer, you will be more likely to get an honest answer. Most imitations of this coin are fairly obvious and I bet some of our forum members will be able to determine if it is a copy from your picture. If it is a high-quality copy, we may not be able to tell from the picture (and most dealers are not experts in these rare coins either; so even if they are honest, they may well not know).

We hope it is an authentic Continental Currency dollar, but the odds are against it. We look forward to seeing the pictures!

Yeah, pictures would be nice. If it has a really grainy surface, chances are it's a fake though...

Take it to a couple of dealers and the local coin club and then you'll know...either keep it and enjoy it or sell for big bucks! PS You may find the answers right here at the Forum...there are lots of "experts" willing to give opinions!
PS Welcome to the Forum...return often and you will learn a lot!
